Sorbitol is used as excipient, moisturizer, antifreeze in toothpaste, adding up to 25 ~ 30%, which can keep the paste lubricated, color and taste good; As an anti-drying agent in cosmetics (instead of glycerin), it can enhance the extensibility and lubricity of emulsifier and is suitable for long-term storage; Sorbitan fatty acid ester and its ethylene oxide adduct have the advantage of little irritation to skin and are widely used in cosmetics industry.

Sorbitol is a very widely used chemical raw material. Sorbitol is dehydrated, hydrolysed, esterified, condensed with aldehydes, reacted with epoxides, and synthesized monomer polymerization or composite polymerization with a variety of monomers to form a series of new products with excellent properties and special functions. Sorbitan fatty acid ester and its ethylene oxide adduct have the advantage of little irritation to skin and are widely used in cosmetics industry.

Sorbitol and propylene oxide are used to produce polyurethane rigid foam with flame retardant properties, or with synthetic fatty acid lipids to produce oil alkyd resin paints. Sorbitol rosin is often used as a raw material for architectural coatings. Sorbitan grease is used as a plasticizer and lubricant in polyvinyl chloride resin and other polymers, and can also be used as a plasticizer for architectural coatings, lubricants, and concrete water reducing agents.

Sorbitol is complexed with iron, copper and aluminum ions in alkaline solution and is used in bleaching and washing in textile industry.

Food addition

The more hydroxyl groups contained in sugars, the better the effect of inhibiting protein freezing denaturation. Sorbitol contains 6 hydroxyl groups, which has strong water absorption and can be combined with water through hydrogen bonding to reduce the water activity of the product and maintain the flavor and quality of the product.

By combining strongly with water, sorbitol can reduce the water activity of the product, thereby limiting the growth and reproduction of microorganisms. Sorbitol has chelating properties and can bind to metal ions to form chelates, thereby retaining internal water and preventing metal ions from binding to enzyme activity, reducing the activity of proteases. For frozen storage, sorbitol as an antifreeze agent can reduce the formation of ice crystals, protect the integrity of cells and prevent the degeneration of proteins, and other preservatives such as complex phosphate can further improve the antifreeze effect. In the processing of aquatic products, sorbitol is also widely used as a water activity reducer to improve the storage life and quality of products. The combination of antifreeze agent group (1% compound phosphate +6% trehalose +6% sorbetol) significantly improved the binding ability of shrimp and water, and inhibited the damage of ice crystals to muscle tissue during freezing-thawing process. The combination of L-lysine, sorbitol and low sodium substitute salts (20% potassium lactate, 10% calcium ascorbate and 10% magnesium chloride) can improve the quality of beef prepared with low sodium substitute salt.
